how to establish a firm foundation for healthy eating

We all deserve to live our healthiest and happiest life possible.  With this e-Newsletter,
I have committed to share with you the best and most current practices that are geared towards helping you to live your healthiest life possible.

My name is Phyllis Reid-Jarvis and my life's purpose is to help people live their healthiest and happiest life possible.

The Your Health is Your Wealth Report will be delivered to you on a monthly basis, the first Monday of each month.  This eNewsletter will be part of a set of health tools I have to offer you.  Along with my other tools and health programs, this eNewsletter, will help you develop a unique lifestyle program that is reflective of your needs.  This eNewsletter will focus on you and how you can benefit from this service.  You will be provided with nutrition and health strategies that will position you to live your healthiest and happiest life possible.

This month let us work on getting the fundamentals well established regarding healthy eating.  You may need to make some changes in how you have been feeding yourself.  The first gentle challenge I will throw at you is to Eat with Awareness and Mindfulness.  "So much of our eating takes place outside our awareness that it's easy to underestimate how much food we actually put into our bodies". (The End of Overeating, Kessler, 2009)

Research has shown that eating foods that are high in sugar, salt, and fat make you want to eat more.  This is a deliberate business strategy by food companies - they use science to help them create highly rewarding or addicting foods.  This gets you hooked.  Typically, these are the kinds of foods many people are nibbling on throughout the day.  These foods are laid out in your office; they are in your car and at your desk.  Increase your awareness of what you eat, and you will start winning your health back.

You can undo any mindless eating by using a journal to keep track of what you eat, when you eat and where you do most of your eating.  Journaling is a great tool to help you gain control over your food choices.

My second gentle challenge to you is to eat for the healthy enjoyment of food.  To lay a solid foundation for healthy eating you will be best served learning to enjoy eating without any guilt or regrets.  To do this I recommend you consider the following strategies:

  1. Get organized - create a list of 10 meals you enjoy and that fit in with your health goals.
  2. Match your list of meals to the Glycemic Index (GI) - choose low GI foods more often.
  3. Manage your Basic Cupboard so it reflects your health goals - you eat what is available.
  4. Grocery shop in a way that reflects your health goals.
  5. Tie the Game Plan for Wellness to your health goals - see Solutions for Health for the Game Plan for Wellness.
  6. Use the Healthy Eating Schedule to guide how often you eat certain types of foods.

"The great aim of education is not knowledge but action" Herbert Spencer (19th century philosopher, known for coining the term "survival of the fittest").  Keeping this philosophy in mind, you can start laying your solid foundation for healthy eating today by starting with these two strategies I have shared with you.  You will be on your way to living your healthiest and happiest life possible.
