This is the final issue of Your Health is Your Wealth newsletter until the fall. This topic is a great way to kick off summer and stay in shape until we resume in the fall.

According to Robin Sharma and Nike “we are all athletes on the playing field of life”- I agree wholeheartedly with this comment. I like the analogy of us all being athletes on the playing field of life, when you stop and think about it, I think you can see the similarities.

What do athletes do to get ready for competition? They train! In studying the most successful athletes, I noticed a common element among them; they not only train their physical bodies to ensure they perform at their best, but they also train their minds. This whole person approach to preparing for competition is what sets the Olympic calibre athletes aside from the rest. This is where I would like to share my insights with you- the whole person approach to getting the most out of your workouts in life.

You Truly Are What You Eat!
So many people expect great results from their exercise regimen-they faithfully go to the gym, the go through their exercise routine then they stop at a local fast food restaurant after! The science is clear; to get the most out of your workouts you must fuel your body in a way that is conducive with your overall goals. Your diet is responsible for approximately 80% to 90% of a successful exercise program-especially if part of your goal is weight loss.

Going to the gym is very beneficial but the clincher is what you feed the inner athlete that will make or break a successful exercise regimen. This is where the whole person approach to getting the most out of your workouts proves to be helpful.

The whole person approach
If you find you are not making gains from your exercise program asking yourself the following questions might provide you with much needed insight:

Questions about your diet:

  1. Does my diet complement or contradict my exercise program?
  2. What types of foods do I regularly eat?
  3. Am I eating too much, too little or too often of the wrong types of foods?
  4. Do I prepare most of my meals or do they mostly come from a package?

Questions about your inner athlete:

  1. How aligned are your fundamental values with how you live your life?
  2. What are your intentions for your exercise program?
  3. What do you desire to have more or less of in your life?
  4. What needs to happen in your life to let you know you are achieving your desires?

Learning how to successfully feed your inner athlete is far more than sprinting out the starting block and then running out of steam half-way in the race. According to Gordon Macdonald, in his book, Ordering your Private World, the best athletes know that the life’s race is run not on speed but on endurance. Creating actions that will help you best feed your inner athlete will translate in you running your best race possible that life has to offer. This you can achieve by working with a life/health coach to help you create more clarity in your life.
