With this e-Newsletter, This month, the focus is on how to get more of what you desire in your life and especially how to lay a solid foundation for healthy eating. I use four strategies with my clients to help them firmly establish the ways that are necessary for overall health and happiness. These four strategies are one component of my Healthy People Better Workers worksite wellness program: The first strategy is to Re-wire the brain with new habits and new thoughts that are aligned with your health goals. To create lasting lifestyle change, healthy and happy people know they will come upon obstacles and challenges as they go through life. Instead of focusing on the obstacles, they take a different approach- they re-wire their way of thinking about and seeing obstacles. They create a plan that has actions that will get them to their ultimate goal. Healthy and happy people also know that it takes at least 3-weeks for the new habit to take- they give themselves the needed time to truly allow the behaviour to take root. The second strategy is to take time to Re-view each day and assess what went well and what didn’t go so well that day. Instead of focusing on what didn’t go well, healthy and happy people actually start thinking about what can be done differently to get different results. They are honest and don’t shy away from acknowledging areas in their lives that require significant overhaul. This takes them to the third strategy, Re-Learn. Healthy and happy people implement the third strategy in the four R’s which is to Re-Learn by deliberately challenging themselves by doing things differently. By this, I mean, instead of using food as a way to deal with stress or any other challenges in their lives, they choose healthier alternatives such as journaling about the challenge. This is a healthy way to look at the issue and often come up with new and better solutions that are lasting. Re-learning the signals the body sends you is yet another great way to lay the foundations for a permanent and healthy life. Too many of us go through life eating for the wrong reasons. Rather than re-learning the many signals the body sends, too many people turn to soft addictions such as food, superficial television watching, gossiping or numerous other ways to avoid dealing with the true issue at hand- a life that begs to be brought back into balance. Finally, healthy and happy people Re-frame their perspective on life all the time. Rather than digging in their heel and say, I am too tired to exercise, or too overweight to start exercising, or what’s the use, I will still have diabetes, there is no cure for it, they re-frame. They try and see things from a different angle and this new mental outlook is what garners them a lasting lifestyle of health and happiness To lay a firm foundation for healthy eating, practice the following R’s:
